Sunday 15 June 2025 – Walk with optional pub lunch in Sarratt

There will be a lunch in The Boot, Sarratt, followed by a walk of about 4 miles into the Chess Valley, organised by Chris Newman. You are welcome to come to the lunch or the walk or both. Those joining us for lunch should book in advance.

11:30 for 12:00 – Optional lunch at The Boot, Sarratt

The Boot, The Green, Sarratt, Rickmansworth, WD3 6BL. Tel: 01923 262247.

This year’s walk is on Father’s Day, so pubs will be busy, and we’ve been asked reserve places in advance, and to eat at 12:00 rather than our usual 12:30. If you want to come for lunch, please enter your name, the number in your party, and ideally a phone number in case of problems, on Chris’s list. Please aim be there around 11:30.

14:00 – Walk into the Chess Valley

The walk will start at about 14:00 from the green across the road from The Boot. It will be about 4 miles, dropping down into the beautiful Chess Valley. There is a steady climb of about 60 m out of the valley back to Sarratt, and there are a few stiles. Unless we have a wet spell before the walk, there should be little or no mud. However, if everyone wants to, the walk could be extended up the Chess Valley, to a total of about 5½ miles, but with more risk of a muddy patch.

If you only want to join the walk (or come for a drink in The Boot, but not eat), you can just turn without booking.

Directions and parking

Sarratt is south of Hemel Hempstead and west of Watford, and reached through country lanes. The main street north-south through Sarratt is called “The Green”, and there is a long village green on the west side of it. The Boot is on the east side of The Green, opposite Dawes Lane. The Boot has a substantial car park behind, where diners can leave their cars during the walk. There is usually parking space on the residential road along the west side of the green for those who are only walking.
